Introduction
Life has a way of guiding us into new chapters, often when we least expect it. After more than 30 years in midwifery and healthcare, I found myself stepping into a completely different role: creating natural, handmade skincare. At first glance, the two worlds might seem far apart. But the truth is, both share the same core values; care, trust, and a commitment to wellbeing.
So the next question is; "What does it take to leave behind a long-standing career in healthcare and build a brand from scratch, guided only by passion, perseverance, and the wisdom of nature?"
The Transition: From NHS to Nature
For decades, my days were filled with amazing expectant ladies and their supportive family, clinical standards, and supporting families through some of life’s most important moments. Early retirement gave me space to reflect on what I wanted to do next. I knew I wanted to continue caring for people, but in a way that felt creative, hands-on, and connected to nature.
Starting Shea Delight wasn’t just a business decision. It was a healing project; one that allowed me to blend my knowledge of health and wellness with my love for craft. I began experimenting in my kitchen with natural butters, oils, and botanicals, much like many artisan makers do. But with my background, I also had a deep understanding of skin health and safety. This gave me a unique perspective: skincare that is both nurturing and clinically conscious.
Building Shea Delight: Lessons From the Market
When I first brought my products to London markets; Jubilee Market in Covent Garden and Greenwich Market, I wasn’t sure how people would respond. Would they connect with palm oil–free soaps? Would they value handcrafted butters over mainstream high-street creams? Of course the answer came quickly through conversations.
Tourists from abroad loved the authenticity. Local families appreciated the natural, eco-conscious formulations. One customer told me she had tried countless high-street creams for her daughter’s eczema, but it was Shea Delight’s simple whipped butter that finally offered relief. These stories reaffirmed why I was doing this; skincare can be small, everyday comfort with a big impact.
Skincare and Nature: A Shared Philosophy
Midwifery taught me that small details; listening closely, offering reassurance, providing gentle solutions, make the biggest difference. The same applies in skincare. Instead of overwhelming the skin with unnecessary chemicals, I focus on natural ingredients that work in harmony with the body’s own processes. Some of our popular skincare range:
- Calendula and Chamomile infused argan oil: chosen for their traditional use in soothing inflammation and nurturing fragile skin.
- Shea butter whipped with aloe vera: crafted for deep hydration without harsh additives.
- Solid shampoo bars: offering effective cleansing while reducing plastic waste.
These products are not just items for sale; they are an extension of my philosophy: nature-inspired, eco-conscious, and rooted in care.
Challenges and Rewards of Reinvention
Starting over in my 50s has not been easy. There were moments of doubt; from learning business finances to standing for long hours at markets. But each hurdle became a lesson in resilience. My background in leadership and management helped me stay organised, but passion is what truly carried me through. I remind myself often that this journey is about more than skincare. It’s about showing that reinvention is possible at any stage of life.
Customers often tell me that my story inspires them; whether it’s to change careers, start a hobby, or simply embrace natural living. If you’ve ever thought it’s “too late” to start something new, let Shea Delight be proof that it’s never too late to follow a passion.
Whether you’re looking for skincare that’s kinder to your body or inspiration to take a leap in your own life, I invite you to join me on this journey.

Summary From midwife to maker, my path has been guided by the same principles: care, nature, and trust. Shea Delight is more than a skincare brand; it’s a continuation of a lifelong commitment to wellbeing.
With every soap bar, butter, or oil, I hope to offer not just a product, but a piece of that philosophy.
