Squalane: The Quiet Skincare Ingredient That Deserves More Attention

Some skincare ingredients arrive with a great deal of noise. They appear suddenly in advertisements, social media videos and product launches, often accompanied by impressive promises. Others simply get on with the job. Squalane belongs to the second group.

As a formulator, I have always been interested in ingredients that earn their place in a formulation. An ingredient should not be included simply because its name looks impressive on a label or because it happens to be trending that month. I want to understand what it contributes to the whole formulation, how it feels on the skin, how stable it is, what the evidence says about it and, importantly, whether the claims being made about it are reasonable. Squalane is one of those ingredients that deserves a thoughtful conversation precisely because its value is less dramatic than many skincare trends suggest.

First, what exactly is squalane?

One letter separates squalene and squalane, but they are not exactly the same thing. Squalene, with an e, is a naturally occurring lipid found in human sebum—the mixture of lipids produced by our sebaceous glands. Research literature describes squalene as an important component of skin-surface lipids. Squalane, with an a, is the hydrogenated, saturated form of squalene. Hydrogenation makes it considerably more resistant to oxidation and therefore more suitable for stable cosmetic formulations.  

I think this distinction matters because skincare marketing sometimes blurs the line between what our skin naturally produces and what we apply from a cosmetic bottle. Saying that squalane is related to a naturally occurring skin lipid is accurate. Saying that every bottle of squalane is simply “your skin’s own oil in a bottle” would be an oversimplification. Cosmetic squalane is a processed ingredient, and the process that converts squalene to squalane is precisely what gives it much of its value to a formulator: stability, elegant skin feel and versatility.

Why does the source of squalane matter?

Historically, commercial squalene could be obtained from shark liver oil. Today, plant-derived routes are widely available, including sources associated with olives and sugarcane. For an environmentally conscious brand, however, I believe it is important not to rely on a vague assumption that all squalane is automatically plant-derived. A responsible formulator should know the source and specification of the particular raw material being purchased.

This is an important point about natural formulation generally. An ingredient name on an INCI list does not always tell the consumer the entire sourcing story. Two products may both list Squalane, while their supply chains and raw-material origins may differ. This is one reason why ingredient knowledge involves more than simply reading a recipe and ordering materials.

What does squalane actually do for the skin?

The most defensible way to describe squalane is as an emollient. Emollients help soften and smooth the skin and improve the feel of dry, rough skin. Moisturising formulations generally work through combinations of mechanisms: humectants attract or bind water, emollients improve softness and smoothness by filling spaces between shedding skin cells, and more occlusive materials help reduce water loss. The categories can overlap, and a well-designed moisturiser often combines several approaches rather than expecting one fashionable ingredient to do everything.  

This is where I think squalane becomes particularly interesting. Some very rich oils and butters can feel heavy on the face, while squalane generally offers a lighter, silkier sensory profile. That can make it useful in facial oils, serums, moisturising emulsions and other formulations where a formulator wants emollience without an excessively greasy after-feel.

There is an important distinction here: squalane is not a humectant. I sometimes see skincare discussions treat all moisturising ingredients as though they work in exactly the same way. They do not. A humectant and an emollient can complement one another, but they perform different roles. Understanding those roles is more useful than simply collecting a long list of fashionable ingredients.

Is squalane a miracle ingredient?

No, and I say that as someone who genuinely values it.

One of my concerns about modern skincare culture is the pressure to turn every useful ingredient into a miracle. An ingredient can be excellent without curing acne, reversing ageing, removing pigmentation, repairing every damaged barrier and transforming the skin overnight. When we make exaggerated claims, we do a disservice both to consumers and to genuinely good ingredients.

The established cosmetic case for squalane is strongest around its role as a stable, skin-conditioning emollient with useful sensory properties. The Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety reviewed the available data on squalane and squalene and reaffirmed that they are safe as cosmetic ingredients under the practices of use and concentrations described in its assessment.  

There is also emerging laboratory research exploring broader biological effects. For example, a 2025 study examined squalane in human dermal fibroblasts exposed to UVA and reported effects relating to oxidative stress, inflammatory signalling and collagen metabolism. This is interesting research, but it is important to describe it correctly: a laboratory cell study is not the same thing as a clinical trial showing that applying a squalane cosmetic to human faces reverses photoageing. The findings are promising areas for further research, not permission to make unlimited anti-ageing claims.  

That distinction is important to me. Good skincare education should be able to say, “This is interesting” without immediately turning it into, “This has been proven to transform your skin.”

Squalene, oxidation and acne: where things become more complicated

This is also an area where the difference between squalene and squalane becomes particularly important.

Research has investigated the oxidation—or peroxidation—of squalene in relation to acne. Studies have found associations between oxidised squalene products and inflammatory processes involved in acne, and more recent work has continued to examine squalene and its peroxide forms in acne-prone skin. This does not mean that cosmetic squalane and naturally occurring squalene should be treated as interchangeable, nor does it prove that applying a squalane-containing cosmetic causes acne.  

I mention this because internet skincare discussions often remove scientific findings from their context. One study becomes a headline; the headline becomes a social media post; and by the time it reaches the consumer, all the qualifications have disappeared. The responsible question is not simply, “Is this ingredient good or bad?” It is: Which ingredient form? At what concentration? In what formulation? On which skin? What type of study produced the claim?

From my formulation table: an ingredient is never the whole formula

This is perhaps the part of the discussion I feel most strongly about.

When I look at an ingredient such as squalane, I do not see an isolated hero ingredient floating in a bottle. I think about the whole formulation around it. What is the intended product? Who is it designed for? What other emollients are present? Is the formulation anhydrous or an emulsion? What sensory finish am I trying to achieve? Is the raw material suitable for the brand’s sourcing principles? How does it behave alongside the other ingredients?

This is where formulation differs from ingredient collecting. A product containing ten impressive ingredients is not automatically better than one containing five carefully selected ingredients. Sometimes restraint produces the more elegant formulation.

At  Shea.Delight⁠, my interest in squalane comes from that formulation perspective. It is not there because I need another fashionable word for the front of a bottle. I am interested in what it contributes to the complete product experience: the glide, the spreadability, the after-feel and its role within a considered blend of ingredients.

Is squalane only for dry or mature skin?

I would be cautious about putting squalane into a narrow age or skin-type box. Its lightweight sensory properties mean that formulators can use it in products intended for different skin profiles. However, suitability depends on the finished formulation, not merely the presence of one ingredient.

This is another skincare myth worth challenging: the idea that one ingredient can determine whether an entire product is suitable for everyone with “oily skin”, “dry skin” or “mature skin”. Skin is more complicated than those four or five labels printed on cosmetic packaging. Climate, cleansing habits, medication, hormonal changes, age, underlying skin conditions and the rest of a person’s routine can all influence how skin behaves.

For mature skin, the conversation is particularly interesting to me personally. As we age, many people notice changes in dryness, texture and comfort. The temptation is to respond by buying the most aggressive product promising to make us look younger. I increasingly question that approach. Perhaps some of the most valuable things we can do for ageing skin are less dramatic: cleanse thoughtfully, protect it from ultraviolet radiation, maintain comfortable moisturisation and choose products that we actually enjoy using consistently.

Can squalane replace your moisturiser?

Possibly for some people in some circumstances—but I would not present that as a universal rule.

A pure oil or emollient does not provide water to the skin in the way that a well-designed water-containing moisturiser can. A complete moisturising formulation may contain water, humectants and different types of emollient and occlusive ingredients working together. Reviews of moisturiser science emphasise that dry-skin management and barrier support often depend on the interaction of different ingredient classes rather than a single material.  

For this reason, I prefer to think of squalane as a useful member of the formulation team rather than the entire team. In some routines, a few drops of a well-formulated facial oil may be used as the final step. In others, squalane may already be incorporated into a serum or cream. There is no prize for using the greatest number of products.

The myth of the “hero ingredient”

We live in an era of ingredient-led beauty. Consumers now know words such as niacinamide, ceramides, peptides, retinoids and hyaluronic acid. I think that increased curiosity is positive. An informed customer can ask better questions.

But ingredient literacy has an unintended side effect: we can begin shopping for individual ingredients rather than well-designed products. We see one ingredient on the front label and assume we know everything about the formulation.

We do not.

Concentration matters. Ingredient quality matters. The delivery system matters. Compatibility matters. Packaging matters. For water-containing cosmetics, preservation matters enormously. Stability matters. How the product is used matters. A beautiful INCI list does not automatically guarantee a beautiful formulation.

Squalane is an excellent example of why nuance matters. I value it precisely because I do not need to turn it into something magical. Its usefulness is enough.

What should you look for when choosing a squalane product?

I would begin with the same questions I would ask about any skincare product. Is the company clear about what the product is designed to do? Does the full formulation make sense for your needs? Are the claims proportionate to the evidence? If plant origin is important to you, does the supplier or brand clearly state its sourcing?

I would also look beyond the word squalane on the front of the packaging. Is it a pure squalane product, a facial oil blend, a serum or an emulsion? These are different products and will feel and perform differently. Someone wanting a lightweight finishing oil may make a different choice from someone looking for a complete moisturising cream.

Patch testing a new cosmetic remains sensible, particularly for people with reactive skin or a history of sensitivity. “Generally well tolerated” should never be translated into “no individual can ever react to this product”. Finished cosmetics contain multiple ingredients, and individual responses vary.

Why I think squalane deserves more attention

Not because it is new. It isn’t.

Not because it can perform miracles. It can’t.

I think it deserves attention because it represents something I would like to see more of in skincare: ingredients chosen for a clear purpose rather than a dramatic story.

As a formulator, there is something satisfying about an ingredient that improves the character of a formulation without demanding to be the loudest thing in it. Squalane can bring softness, slip and a light emollient quality to a carefully designed product. Its hydrogenated structure gives it greater oxidative stability than its squalene precursor, making it useful from a formulation perspective.  

Perhaps our skincare routines could benefit from that quieter approach too. We do not always need another harsh active, another ten-step routine or another product promising a new face by next Tuesday. Sometimes good skincare is about understanding what our skin needs, choosing well-made products and giving them time to do the jobs they were actually designed to do.

And perhaps that is the real reason I wanted to write about squalane. It reminds me that quietly effective and scientifically interesting can be more valuable than fashionable and exaggerated.
